A Certificate Is a Claim — Documentation Is Evidence
When buyers search for an ISO 9001 machining supplier, the logo on a website is the least useful piece of information available. What matters is whether the shop can produce objective, lot-specific evidence that your parts were made from the right material, to the right dimensions, and checked by calibrated instruments. What the Common Certifications Mean
ISO 9001 is the baseline quality management system (QMS) standard. Holding it means an accredited body has audited the company's processes — order review, document control, calibration, nonconformance handling — and found them systematic and repeatable. It does not certify that any individual part is good; it certifies that a process exists to make parts consistently and to catch problems. For general industrial machining, ISO 9001 is the reference point most buyers use.
AS9100 builds on ISO 9001 with additional requirements for aerospace: stricter risk management, configuration control, first article inspection to AS9102, and tighter control of counterfeit parts and foreign object debris. If you buy flight hardware or defense-adjacent components, AS9100 (or an OEM-specific equivalent) is typically a hard requirement, not a preference — see how this plays out for aerospace machining buyers.
ISO 13485 is the QMS standard for medical device manufacturing. It adds requirements around traceability, risk management, validation, and documentation discipline aligned with device regulations. If your parts go into a medical device supply chain, ask specifically about ISO 13485 — ISO 9001 alone does not cover it.

How to Audit a Machine Shop Beyond the Certificate
Whether or not a shop holds a certificate, these questions tell you how quality actually works on the floor:
- 1. Show me a recent first article inspection report. A real FAI report with measured values against drawing callouts — not a template — is the single best indicator of inspection discipline.
- 2. How are instruments calibrated, and can you show records? Micrometers, gauges, and CMMs should have calibration stickers and traceable records.
- 3. How do you handle a nonconformance? A good answer names containment, root cause, and corrective action — not "we remake it."
- 4. Can you trace material to a mill certificate? Lot-level traceability matters if a part ever fails in the field.
- 5. What documentation ships with my order by default? The answer reveals what the shop considers normal.
