5 Axis CNC Machining Services

Complex, multi-face parts machined in fewer setups — aerospace, medical, and industrial components to tight tolerances.

Complex Geometry, Fewer Setups, Better Accuracy

IsoCNC provides 5 axis CNC machining for parts that outgrow 3 axis CNC machining: multi-face components, deep pockets at compound angles, contoured surfaces, and geometry where feature-to-feature accuracy across faces is critical. Machining in one or two setups instead of five eliminates re-fixturing error — and on complex parts, it usually costs less too, because fixture design and manual re-clamping disappear from the quote. Our multi axis CNC machining capacity runs both positional (3+2) and full simultaneous work, from single prototypes through production batches.

When 5-Axis Is the Right Call

Positional (3+2) machining tilts and locks the part to present each feature square to the tool. It is the efficient choice for parts with features on multiple faces — valve bodies, housings with angled ports, brackets with compound-angle holes — and it often runs on standard-length tooling.

Simultaneous 5-axis machining moves all five axes together to cut continuous surfaces: impellers, blisks, turbine components, organic ergonomic forms, and molds with complex draft. The tool stays short and normal to the surface, so finish and accuracy improve on deep features.

Typical parts we route to 5-axis:

  • Structural brackets for aerospace programs, with weight-saving pockets and compound angles
  • Impellers, rotors, and bladed components
  • Components for medical devices and instruments with multi-face datums
  • Housings with ports or features on five or six faces
  • Prototypes of parts that will be 5-axis parts in production

Why Fewer Setups Means Better Parts

Every re-clamp introduces positioning error. A part machined across five setups carries four opportunities for datums to drift; the same part in one 5-axis setup carries none. For drawings with true-position or profile callouts across faces, 5-axis machining is often the only economical way to hold them — and it removes the fixture costs that multi-setup work would need. For buyers comparing 5 axis machining services, the questions that matter are machine accuracy, in-process probing, and how the shop verifies the finished part — ask for a sample inspection report.

Materials and Tolerances

We 5-axis machine aluminum (6061, 7075), stainless (304, 316L, 17-4), titanium Grade 5, alloy steels, and engineering plastics including PEEK and Ultem. General tolerances run ±0.005 in (±0.13 mm); precision and true-position features to ±0.001 in (±0.025 mm) are quoted against the drawing, with CMM verification across multi-face datum structures. How We Program and Fixture 5-Axis Work

A 5-axis quote starts with a CAM review, not a rate card. A programmer checks tool reach against the trunnion envelope, simulates the full toolpath for collisions, and decides where 3+2 positioning beats simultaneous cutting on cycle time. Fixturing is planned in the same pass — dovetail or five-sided workholding wherever possible, so the spindle cuts instead of indexing around clamps. That review is part of the DFM feedback on every 5-axis RFQ.

What to Send for a 5-Axis Quote

  • A complete 3D model — 5-axis programming is model-driven; surfaces and drafts should be final
  • A 2D drawing with datums — tell us which features relate to which; that is what drives setup strategy
  • Critical tolerances called out — blanket tight tolerances on a 5-axis part multiply programming and inspection time

Every 5-axis job gets DFM review before quoting: if a 3+2 approach beats simultaneous cutting on cost, or a feature should move to a second operation, we will say so. Parts ship with dimensional inspection — see quality inspection.

When 5-Axis Pays for Itself

5-axis time costs more per hour than 3-axis — so the question is total part cost, not machine rate. As a rule of thumb, once a part needs three or more setups on a 3-axis machine, 5-axis usually wins: fixture design and fabrication disappear, re-clamp labor disappears, and the scrap risk from stacked fixturing error goes with them. A bracket that runs across four vises and two custom fixtures is almost always cheaper — and more accurate — done in one 5-axis cycle.

The opposite is also true, and we will tell you so: simple prismatic parts with features on one or two faces belong on 3-axis machines, and routing them to a trunnion just burns budget. When you send an RFQ, we quote the cheapest process that holds your drawing — if that is 3+2 instead of simultaneous, or 3-axis instead of either, the quote says so.
